Trash vs Recycle Bin

Imagine a waste basket. Think of a yesterday thrown away piece inside the trash. Now you realize that you need the thrown away piece again. What would you do to fetch back the piece?

A) Search in the trash and automaticaly move the piece to the place where it was before you thrown it away (even if you don’t know where it was before you’ve thrown it away)

B) Search in the trash, take the piece and put it to whereever you want.

OK. Take my second example:

Think of a thrown away bookshelf with many different books in it. What would you do if you realize that you need one book in the bookshelf back?

A) Search in the trash for the bookshelf, restore the complete bookshelf to the place it was before, move the book somewhere else, throw away the bookshelf again.

B) Search in the trash for the bookshelf, search in the bookshelf for the book, restore the book to wherever you want.

I’ve choosen answer B) two times. Answer A) describes the Windows Recycle Bin, answer B) the Trash of Mac OS X.

And now I can understand why so many people think that computer are very difficult, because, in fact, some functionalities (in Windows) are difficult to understand, because they are unnatural.

And that is a very important fact why I prefer Mac OS X; because it is simple, things work like I think they should work, things work natural and that is easy.

exam, PHPShell

I finished my last exam this term on saturday. Now I hope I will be able to write more posts for my weblog …

Today I found a nice tool, called PhpShell, which I am using to get Typo3 running at my brother’s website.
PhpShell allows you to run a command line in your browser, really fine!

April, April

I just visited http://planet.debian.net/ and the title of the page was showing „Planet Ubuntu“. First I was a bit confused, then I took a look at http://planet.gnome.org/ and there appeared the Planet KDE.

Really funny spoof, this made my day. :-)))

Ubuntu on AMD64

I just finished the Ubuntu installation on my new AMD64.

Here’s a screenshot.

The intallation was straightforward and without any problems. And everything I wanted (but I didn’t really expected) is working right out of the box (Lan, Internet, Gnome, etc…). Really nice this Ubuntu.

Google ???

Today I did a search of „kreiseder“ at AskJeeves and this website was ranked first (yes!). After that I tried the same with google, and there kreiseder.at wasn’t even on the first page. Can anybody tell me why? Mhhhh….

Mono – Webservices – Linux

Yesterday we played a bit with MONO and Linux, and it was quite interesting and fascinating. Tobi has some details.

Sure, Linux is really different to Windows, sometimes it’s hard to get the complete system running, but Linux is quite more fascinating than a Windows box.

It’s time for me to use a bit more Linux at home again (for testing and playing around), but my OS of choice was and is: MacOS X, because it combines the power UNIX and the best user interface.

Command Line

Since I switched to the dark side of the force(here:W32) as a result of my job-switch three years ago, more and more I forgot the power of the commandline. Now it’s time to refresh my command-line skills.

Today I found I this interesting link: Introduction to Command Line Linux.

Scripting iTunes

Since I am an iPod owner, I am using iTunes more intense than before. And I have plenty tasks, that I want to automate, like editing a bunch of song attributes to cover my needs.
For a start, I found this very helpful site: Doug’s AppleScripts for iTunes.
And scripting iTunes with AppleScript really is great, because it’s powerful and simple. And once again I am extremely happy with my Mac.
